Spring Cleaning!May 12th, 2007 by Narendra |
We have gotten back to some of the basics recently doing some fun usability improvements. Sometimes it takes a while before you understand what is good and what isn’t. Here is a quick run down on some new tweaks:
- clicking search results brings up the Day View and shifts the calendar behind so you know the context
- search results are now paginated
- search results include items from your Buddies and can be toggled for just your stuff
- scrolling or moving around in the Day View now gives a delicate flash on the calendar behind so you know where you are in the month (I love this one!)
- the mouseover display now has events aligned
- all icons except the star (important) have been pushed out to the right side of the mouseover and Day View because they were just getting in the way (now they are parallel and can clue you in more quickly
- feed events get an underline on hover to make the look more even and cleaner
- trying out tiny avatars for Buddy events in the Day View
We stare at 30 Boxes every day for hours and will not rest until the experience is unsurpassed anywhere online.

Everything looks and feels great! I really like the Icon removal.

Really nice work - as usual.
Couple of comments:
1) on the day hover the icons are not right-justified. For example, three events on the day, one is repeating, second one is repeating, reminded and private. Third one can be just two icons. You’ll notice the events with only one icon are sort of “centered” from the right.
2) Love the tiny avatars in the Day view. Suggest toggle of buddies in Day view just like you offer now in the search results (nice work on that by the way).
3) on the day hover if an event description is word-wrapped, the second line is not indented properly. I am using Hillary’s mash-up Serif (http://3to5.com/experiments/30b/mashupSerif) which may also have something to do with it.
Thanks again to the all three of you for creating such an outstanding product.

hey bill. i saw the 30b changes over the weekend, and made some changes to my themes. you might need to do a hard refresh (Shift-Refresh on a PC) to clear your cache of the old CSS file. let me know via sMail if it’s still wonky.

“clicking search results brings up the Day View and shifts the calendar behind so you know the context”
the math behind it seems wrong:
moving up/down one day in the Day View shifts calendar up/down by one week each time, in addition to shifting the focus left/right one day.
therefore, shifting just four days across (or less) shifts the current week out of sight (my calendar shows just four weeks).
im using ff2 on xp sp2.

my bad. i take back the bug report. the original greasemonkey scrollwheel script caused the scrolling. (im using it because ff on 1024×768 is not tall enough to fit the full 30b calendar, and native scrolling is disabled as a result.) perhaps this is a chance to petition for an option to enable scrollwheel for me as well?
