Turning One!February 5th, 2007 by Narendra |
Today is the first anniversary of the 30 Boxes launch last year! What began as a side project has grown into a bit of an opus.
We’ve decided to let some statistics relate how much we have taken the concepts of two-way web and beta to heart.
In the 365 days AFTER we launched 30 Boxes, we have:
- Released 3,504 code changes on 244 unique days.
- Posted 1,321 times in the forum.
- Posted 99 times to our blog.
And there are still just 3 of us.
Are you ready for year 2?

Many kudos to all three of you. The three of you are truly amazing. Congratulations on achieving so much well-respected recognition - even from the likes of Google. The stats show us (the users) that you care about us through your product and that means a lot to us. Even if it’s not always working perfect we know you’ll listen. It’s not everyday so many users of a product interface directly with the programmers. Then again, it’s not everyday that a programmer would want to interface with so many users! This achievement shows that you have a professional and technical intellect combined with “people” skills. I’m honored to be apart of such a great achievement and I’m proud to have helped hone and shape this product.
I know Year 2 will be huge - hang on to your boot straps!

I love you guys. i signed up when i saw you on rocketboom. I tested you out for a while and then went to google calendar but i came back. I love this service i happily donated and would pay if it ever comes to that. Please have a reasonable yearly fee if it comes to that.

congrats guys
It’s great to see how much you’ve grown.
I’m sorry for posting a feature request here (but I can’t seem to post in the reqs part of the forum since I’m not a moderator), but I think 30boxes has grown enough to set a new standard in the world of calendaring. As it is today, iCal is great and I don’t suggest you ever drop it, but we need to amend some of its shortcomings that are particularly noticeable and frustrating in web calendars.
While it’s easy to subscribe (one-way sync) to a webcal:// the fact that this can only be edited in one place (the place where it was first entered) becomes very frustrating and makes it difficult for new systems (such as stikkit) to work effectively with existing systems (30boxes).
It would be really beneficial to the community if a pioneer-innovator such as 30boxes were to create an open API for their calendar data so that webcalendars could have sync functionality beyond iCal, specifically two-way syncing (or editing from another interface and having those changes reflected in both/all places). This is a real issue worth looking into and it can be quite frustrating; for example, I’m organizing a get together with some friends using stikkit and the event shows up in my stikkit webcal and hence in my 30boxes calendar where I’ve subscribed to it, however when I’m looking my calendar in 30boxes and notice that it conflicts with another event and I need to move it, I CAN’T without going back to stikkit (which is conveniently linked, albeit). Ideally I could just drag the event from one day to another in my calendar where it is obvious to me and the change would be reflected in stikkit to everyone involved.
The best way for 30boxes to encourage movement in this direction is to create an open EDIT API functionality so that, given permission (through an authentication system either like flickr’s or just basic/direct username:pswd) user’s can modify events in their 30boxes calendars through other web services.
It’s important to recognize that users no longer have just one calendar-related webapp, with the diverse variety of different calendar-related application today there is a lot of overlap but not all. By giving away the functionality to input to 30boxes you do not diminish your presence in the user’s world but rather make it easier for them to keep /everything/ with you, and furthermore you have the opportunity to DEFINE A PROTOCOL that other will likely be eager to adopt.
Even just the ability to ‘copy’ a .ics or an event in a webcal to my 30boxes calendar could be very useful, making it editable. for example, I could subscribe to my calendar of events from upcoming.org in 30boxes and then add details to the event (such as who I’m going with or who I met there) in my calendar for myself by copying it to my calendar (and ideally hiding the original entry).
just my two cents
sorry for the length
(and perhaps the misplacement)
cheers
