30 Boxes Social Reputation - Truthiness Rating

October 5th, 2006 by Narendra

We have been putting the finishing touches on a reputation system for 30 Boxes. Everyone within our system now has a Truthiness Rating. Here is a mini FAQ.

Truthiness

What is a Truthiness Rating?
Your TR is a score that is assigned to an email address (currently) that has two elements: a color (yellow or green) and a number (1-9). Green ratings are verified email addresses (or in conjunction with Buddy Cards, verified blog posts). The numerical score is a fuzzy interpretation of a profile’s veracity / connectedness / participation.

Why the word truthiness?
It is a term that was coined by Stephen Colbert at is based on someone’s gut reaction to something. It is our way of acknowledging that social reputation is an imperfect science. We also want Stephen Colbert to mention 30 Boxes on his TV show. If you know him or one of his writers, let him know that his dream is alive in Web2.0.

What is the point?

Someone’s TR allows for a quick interpretation of someone’s online persona. In our Buddy Card system, it also provides an incentive to verify blog posts. In the big picture, we believe that your online reputation is a key piece of information about you and that the interplay of your social media and reputation are essential to building a dynamic replacement (aka Buddy) for what we used to call “contacts.”

Where can I see it in action?
Visit any public Buddy Page (top right corner) within 30 Boxes or have a look at the comments on my personal blog.
