30 Boxes Webtop!

June 10th, 2006 by Narendra

Our latest toy is a slick new webtop that you can use as a starting point for your web apps and stay up to date on the latest updates (calendar and web stuff) from your buddies.

I love that fact that you can customize your background image. The picture below is my webtop with a stylin’ photo courtesy of Thomas Hawk.

Introducing 30 Boxes Webtop

Give it a whirl.  Available from the top left of your calendar or http://30boxes.com/webtop

and for any power users on Firefox, Zach Allia continues to improve on an excellent plugin for 30boxes.  His latest addition allows you to right-click on any image online and turn it into your webtop! Very slick.

Click-click-click-click-click - the webtop page refreshes itself incessantly…

[Narendra: Oskar, could you explain this? ]

    very nice. some personal feedback:

    must have:
    - I would like to open my webapps via webtop. However webtop opens popup windows , but *without* toolbars. I won’t be using webtop as my starting place if i need to add my toolbars in my browser window everyime.

    nice to have:
    - choose my own icon on the dock for opening my personal webapps
    - show ‘number’ of new e-mails on my gmail icon in dock (like Mail does in Mac OS X)
    - same for To Do’s
    - replace webtop when i go to a website (like it does for 30boxs). pop up isnt that cool.
    - be able to import to do’s from Basecamp for the To Do List.

    30 Boxes Webtop!

30 Boxes co-founder Narendra Rocherolle has now posted on the 30 Boxes Blog about their new Webtop Service called 30 Boxes Webtop!
And so far it’s looking pretty good as you can even choose a different background image by giving the webtop an URL…

Ok - when navigating directly to the link (http://www.30boxes.com/index.php?tz=240) in Firefox, the tab just says Loading… while the status bar says Stopped then Waiting for 30boxes.com… then Stopped, etc in endless succession, slowly but surely eating up CPU resources. In IE the statusbar just says Doanloading from 30boxes.com, but the browser emits a click roughly 3 times a second.

However, after going to 30boxes.com then clicking webtop, everything’s fine. I suspect it has to do with the session not being established when trying to access the link directly (from outside 30boxes.com).

Don’t listen to the folks who say Webtop is lame, or uninspired, or pointless given the existence of Netvibes. Stuff like Netvibes and Pageflakes are all well and good, but you guys are approaching it differently, and I LIKE the potential in this new approach. I don’t like a start page filled with 50 little boxes of RSS feeds, weather widgets, and so on.

If Webtop comes to add features like having the Gmail “dock” icon display unread message count, for example, that would rock. And if clicking on said icon popped up a window (a la the Todo List) with the subjects and body previews, that would also rock. Rather than having a cluttered, claustrophobic page filled with widgets and feeds all clamoring for your attention, it would be nice to see the Webtop approach expanded in this way.

So again - don’t listen to the naysayers. The 30 Boxes approach has merit, and lots of potential. I like it already, and given what awesome stuff you guys have done with the calendar portion, I know I’m not expecting too much when I expect great things from what you’re hinting at with the current Webtop.

    Keep up the great work!

Oskar: I noticed this happening in Safari, too. If you want to bookmark the Webtop view, just use this URL: http://30boxes.com/?showWebtop=1

That seems to work fine without the infinite loop stuff.

Doesn’t seem to be working on my IE7. Just thrashes incessantly, refreshing the address bar non-stop. View source shows about 6 lines of curious JavaScript.

Same problem as Oskar here. Over and over, it tries to load the page but never does.

    Thomas Hochmann Says:

Will: use this URL instead and things should work fine: http://30boxes.com/?showWebtop=1

Hope that does the trick for you :)

I fully agree with Thomas, and think this is a really novel and great idea. However I must say that it seems to be quite firmly in teh “development” category for now and will take a great deal of work to realize it’s full potential. Maybe you guys should take a look at the SymphonyOS and it’s Mezzo desktop project.

I think you’ll get some great ideas. Good luck and thanks for making and continuously improving this great app. BTW I reviewed 30Boxes on my nlog. Come see.
