30 Boxes Event and Feed MapperMay 25th, 2006 by Narendra |
First of all, anyone out there who digs maps and mashups should try out our favorite mapping app — Wayfaring. After playing around with the Google Maps API for a couple of weeks, we decided to add some mapping to 30b. You can get to it from View > Map Events or http://30boxes.com/map. The results are pretty fun!
We owe Chris Messina some props for his Mapendar concept which has been tweaked a bit but does a lot of the basics like show your events, your buddies’ events, and any events that arrive via location aware feeds (currently upcoming.org and dodgeball’s ics feed).
Remember, until you add locations to your events by using the following One Box format:
[1000 market st, san francisco, ca]
or enter it into the Notes field (with brackets) of an existing event, nothing will show up on your map!
In the process of building an import tool, we decided to open up the application to allow you to map any rss or ical feed provided it is well-formed and has location info. We have tested out a bunch from upcoming.org, zvents.com, eventful.com, google calendar. This is an experimental tool that can be formed with the url: http://30boxes.com/map?[encoded url to feed] and feel free to discuss it in the forum.

Hey! Nice feature, but as I live in Stockholm, Sweden, I wonder: will 30 Boxes recognise Swedish (at least Stockholmian) addresses? I tried adding “Stockholm” (in brackets, without the quotation-marks) which actually works when clicking the link for the day where the reference is included, but nothing is shown in http://30boxes.com/map. Any assistance would be great, by e-mail, even.
