30 Boxes Adds Webcal SubscriptionsApril 3rd, 2006 by Narendra |
We launched an oft requested feature over the weekend: support for webcal subscriptions to calendars available in the ical/ics format.
Under My Settings > Web Stuff you will now find a section called “Web Calendars” and all you have to do is find a webcal:// link out in the wild and add it there. That calendar will be shown on your 30 Boxes and become part of your buddy page. (Please note, that all Web Stuff is considered public info and will be shared with buddies by default. In the future we will be adding a private flag for these items.)
A couple of good places to start include the icalshare website and Apple who has lots of holidays.
Have fun and please share great calendar links in our forum!
30 Boxes!

Great! Except they don’t seem to be showing up in my calendar yet…

Matt,
I saw that you added some baseball feeds from Apple, they might be last year’s which is why you don’t see anything. icalshare.com has schedules from this year…

same here, don’t show up in iCal, only in 30boxes

Here is one of the Webcal Subscription example. Mashing up 30Boxes with Eventful.
30Boxes supports the integration of feed from Upcoming.org (collaborative event calendar). However, the problem is that you have to manually add each and every event to your “my event” within Upcoming.org for it show up on 30Boxes.
What I am looking for is an automated way of adding all the local “Ajax and Web2.0” events to my 30 Boxes calendar.
I got solution to this above problem by mashing up 30Boxes with Eventful. The reason for using Eventful is that it supports iCal standard whereas Upcoming.org does not support iCal standard.
So here are the steps to mashing up Eventful with 30Boxes
1. First Step that you have to do is to signup at Eventful (http://eventful.com/register)
2. Second step is to get an Application Key. This gives you access to the Eventful API.
Here is the URL to the form that you have to submit in order to get the application key (http://api.evdb.com/keys)
Make sure you are signed into the Eventful site as this is the requirement to get the application key.
3. Replace the Application key that you got from Step 2 in the following URL:
webcal://api.evdb.com/rest/events/ical?app_key =Enter your application Key Here
4. Add the Keywords that you want search on. In my case I want to search on “Ajax and Web2.0” as I want all these events to be added to my 30Boxes account. Here is a sample URL
“ webcal://api.evdb.com/rest/events/ical?app_key =Enter your application Key Here&keywords=web2.0||ajax& location =CA ”
Another thing to note here is that I am restricting all the search results to CA. Hence. I have added Location as CA in the above URL.
5. Last Step is copy the above URL and add it to your 30 Boxes account. Log into you 30Boxes account,
Go to my Settings > Web Stuff > My Web Calendars.
Copy the URL to new web calendar and Click on the Add button
All the events will be added to your 30Boxes calendar.
Done!!
Please let me know if you have questions on the above steps:

Ah, that’s why. Thanks for pointing that out!

Too, if you’ve made a cool calendar on 30 Boxes you wish to share, feel free to add it to iCalShare. (I know we’ve already got a few submissions from 30 Boxes users.)
Thanks for the mention, Narendra!

I had a question about calendar publishing. I can use your webcal:// urls to enter my calendar into iCal (or in my case, Mozilla Calendar), but I can’t seem to be able to do the reverse: i.e publish back to 30boxes from a calendar app. Is there anyway I can do that ?
I’ve been using icalx.com to host my .ics files, but I’d prefer the 30boxes interface.

great now i have 6 reminders of when easter sunday is :-/
isn’t there some way for me to NOT display my friends ICS files?
[Narendra: we will be developing a way to hide any web stuff (calendars or feeds) from buddies. a couple of other things to do first…]

I posted a simpler way to get Eventful search results into 30boxes at Rajlogs:
1. Go to Eventful and type in the search you’re interested in (like “web2.0 || ajax”).
2. Once you’re happy with your search, look for the ICAL buttons in the lower right. Right-click and copy the “Subscribe” link.
3. Copy the URL and add it to your 30 Boxes account via My Settings > Web Stuff > My Web Calendars. Repeat as desired. :)

The ability to turn on/off these subscribed calenders like the tags would be appreciated.
[Narendra: well, you can’t currently turn on/off tags, but we do intend to allow that for webcal subs in the future ]

Great new feature! I’d like a way to upload a .ics file instead of only a web link. I can save Outlook invites as an .ics file which I would like to import into 30Boxes.

It doesn’t work with rememberthemilk.com’s ical feeds.
April 5th, 2006 at 5:24 pm
I too can’t seem to get rememberthemilk.com’s feed to show up in my 30boxes calendar. This would really simplify my workflow if it were possible.

@Marcus Kazmierczak
you can do that through the import tool

It still appears to be the case that ical versions below 2.0 are not supported. is this correct ? my wife’s mac has osx 10.3 :(, and we weren’t planning to upgrade to 10.4 (which has ical 2.0). I don’t think there’s any other way to get ical 2.0

Here’s a third vote for a working rememberthemilk feed. I really need a todo list joined with my calendar… so either fix the feed or implement a todo feature!
April 8th, 2006 at 7:46 pm
I found out why the rememberthemik feeds arent supported…i think. ‘Cause they need SSL/HTTP or HTTPS authentication. Look here: http://www.rememberthemilk.com/forums/bugs/778/
