30bTV - Mashing 30 Boxes with EvokeTV!March 30th, 2006 by Narendra |
[Update: Sadly EvokeTV has gone offline as of Sep 29, 2006]
How would you like to have previews and schedules of the tv shows you like on your calendar? It’s easy with the help of EvokeTV — the cool cats who are liberating tv schedules!
Here’s what you do:
- Sign up with EvokeTV and build a schedule based on the tv shows you like by rating them. You can even choose to have only “new episodes” on your schedule
- From the EvokeTV > My Schedule menu, you will find an RSS Feed link. Copy the link location.
- On 30 Boxes, go to My Settings > Web Stuff and add paste the link into “Your other Web Stuff (any RSS feed)” and then hit the Add button.
- We do the rest. Your shows and small previews will appear on your calendar and will circulate to your Buddies.
Now, you’ll know who Jon Stewart is interviewing tonight.
Here is a screen shot:

30 Boxes!

That is beautiful. I don’t even watch that much TV, but I do like to know who’s on The Daily Show. Nicely done.
March 30th, 2006 at 3:46 pm
SWEET. I like it.
March 30th, 2006 at 3:47 pm
Great idea! I love evoketv and am so happy to mash it up with 30boxes!
March 30th, 2006 at 4:31 pm
Super cool. Is there a way to make things from this feed (or any feed, I guess) show up as regular calendar entries, rather than having to mouse over the day to see what’s there?

“Brilliant!”
March 30th, 2006 at 11:59 pm
Is there anyway to have it show on your calendar only. Any easy way to hide it from others? I have someone I share my calendar with and it doubles up the info from my tv shows and what they have show.
Narendra: well, the other person can uncheck you on their View menu to toggle your stuff on and off. We will be adding a way to selectively hide other people’s Web Stuff

Cool. But you can’t view WebStuff from m.30boxes. It’d be nice if I could check my line-up on the way home and such.
Narendra: good point, we need to add that!
March 31st, 2006 at 1:58 pm
Awesome feature! I second the request for the option to hide WebStuff from others. Another request - can you fix it so the TV shows are listed from earliest to latest like all of my other events? Right now, for me at least, the shows in the evening are showing up before the morning shows which is kind of disorienting.
Narendra: the ordering is on the EvokeTV side. I will send them an email…

Great! Is there an equivalent for the UK?
March 31st, 2006 at 2:47 pm
Hopefully the order should be correct now, not sure how often 30boxes updates the feeds, you can delete it and re-add it to make it update immediately.

This is great!! I can’t seem to get a show to recur on following weeks, though. Is there a trick to it?

Only for Americans :(

This is really cool. What would make it perfect is if I could then see these show in my iCal subscription…
April 2nd, 2006 at 6:43 pm
Cool, and I agree with Marc and Matthew. I’d like to be able to see the TV shows as regular events without mousing, and I’d like to see them in iCal
April 2nd, 2006 at 7:18 pm
Yeah.. I really like this.. however.. I should be able to make the feed for the show as private. My buddies that I share everything with don’t want to and shouldn’t need to see all of the shows that I watch.

www.mightyv.com offer something similar (RSS, iCal, user rating, recommendations) for the UK.

This is a great feature, but I’m seeing a weird bug…
For some reason, tonight’s shows are getting pushed to tomorrow, along with half of tomorrow’s shows, whereas the second half of tomorrows shows show up the day after tomorrow.
So, the latter half of each night’s shows (everything after 10pm) are pushed to the next day.
I checked the Evoke TV listings on their page, and the shows show up on the correct days.
Not sure what’s going on here. I tried deleting and re-entering the RSS feed, but the same problem appears.

Why is any effort being put towards this when Tasks are not yet released? Tasks and Calendars are bread and butter; soup and sandwich. I’m not paying for this service, but I am becoming disappointed at the lack of communication from the dev team regarding Tasks.

this is great ive been using evoketv for a while now and i absolutely love it. this integration works great but viewing the shows with out mousing over would make it fantastic!
April 6th, 2006 at 4:12 pm
Great tool! It’d also be nice if I could get channel information displayed.
April 10th, 2006 at 6:28 am
I agree with Aaron Lake - knowing which channel would be awesome because this tool just ROCKS!!!! Great job!!!
Side note: I’ve been bugging my non-techo wife to use 30b but she’s resisting. She asked me last night while driving home if Desparate Housewives was on and/or a new episide and I quickly shot back that 30b was not showing an episode. She made me check the paper TV guide and low-and-behold Extreme Home Makeover was having a 2-hour episode right using the Desperate Housewives hour as the 2nd hour! She couldn’t believe what the 30b calendar could do!

Didn’t work for me :-( What could I have done wrong?
1) I rated some shows as favourites on Evoke
2) Evoke doesn’t show any of those shows on my Personal Schedule (!?)
3) I copied the RSS link
4) I pasted the RSS link into 30 Boxes Web Stuff and pressed the ADD button
5) Now, I see an RSS logo on my calendar at the date and time I pressed the ADD button, and it pops up a box with a list of my favorite shows - not what it is supposed to do!!!

hey narendra, not sure if you’ll see this, but i have a question for you… how did you get the daily show to only appear in the 11pm time slot (same q for colbert). it’s showing up at 8 & 11 for me and i can’t find a preferences setting for it anywhere.
thanks!
[Narendra: under “My Schedule” there is a checkbox to only show new episodes!]
May 8th, 2006 at 12:19 pm
thanks for the reply. i checked that, but it says it’s “new” in both timeslots. oh well. perhaps i’ll try the evoke tv folks.
thanks again!

Hi- i love this feature, but second the request to have the TV shows displayed in my calendar without having to mouse over them - pretty please?
