Accesskeys for 30 Boxes

March 16th, 2006 by Narendra

Just a few little updates.

First, if you have more than 20 events, we have replaced the One Box help examples in favor of some random tips.

Second, we have accesskeys!

They are not exact same as just hitting keys to move the calendar, but they are simple key combinations that some people may like.

For Firefox, hold down the ALT (on PC) or CTRL (on Mac) and you get the following short cuts:

a - scroll calendar up a week
z - scroll calendar down a week
t - recenter on today

d - bring up detailed entry form

n - bring up detailed entry form
x - to exit the Day View
s - bring up your settings
b - bring up your buddy settings
h - home (i.e. refresh or return to calendar depending on where you are)

If you are using IE, then you hold down the ALT key and the accesskey and then hit RETURN (not pretty but it works!)

Enjoy!

    shortcut keys! awesome!

my only point of contention is alt-D is typically how I jump my cursor to the address bar in Firefox.

    I love you guys.

I do wish you hadn’t used alt-D though… that’s the shortcut to jump to the address bar.

    Cool. Thank you.
Could the “X” accesskey also be made to dismiss the detailed entry form?

What I’d *really* like is to control which day is “selected” with the ‘j’ and ‘k’ accesskeys (a la Vi) and then also have an accesskey to view the day view for that day. Might be difficult to find enough keys though given that you’ll have to avoid all the standard Alt+ accesskeys in Firefox and IE on Windows.

Add this to the bottom of my calendar, like how Gmail does it, to remind me :)

Nice with the access keys, just what I like! Now, personally, I’d like to be able to scroll day-by-day, using e.g. the keys q and w.

This is neat, but alt-D intercepts firefox’s built-in “focus the URL bar” action (which i use heavily). Could alt-d be changed to something else?

Oh nos. The alt-d accesskey highjacks a Firefox and IE keyboard shortcut that focuses the cursor on the location bar. (Yes, I know there are alternative shortcuts, but I’ve got an alt-d reflex lodged deep in the reptilian brain.) I notice that alt-b and alt-h also conflict with browser GUI. You guys might want to review this wonky chart: http://www.wats.ca/resources/accesskeysandkeystrokes/38

Oh, and why no accesskey for the One Box? Don’t know about anyone else, but I always expect the calendar view to focus to the One Box onload…but it never does!

Keep on truckin’ - love what you’ve got so far.

Accesskeys are problematic. Users tend not to discover them until the browser stops doing what is expected by routine. You might want to check out this wonky chart for common conflicts: http://www.wats.ca/resources/accesskeysandkeystrokes/38.

But if you’re going to use them, why not an accesskey for the One Box? If you focused to the One Box form onload of the calendar view, alt-h would serve as a shortcut. Don’t know about anyone else, but I always expect the calendar view to focus to the One Box anyway. It never does though…it never does.

Anyways, love 30 Boxes so far.

The access keys are great! Is there any chance we can get access keys for the mobile version? it would be great if I could use the 9 key to access the next day and 7 key to access the previous day on my mobile phone for example.

Also, I saw some discussion on suggesting a new UI for the mobile version to provide a “jump to date option”. How about a link at the bottom called “jump to” that takes you to a new page for date entry. This could have an access key of 5 maybe. And access key 0 could take you back to today.

Just some ideas… Keep the improvements coming!

Love the keyboard macros… however I’ve grown accustomed to the way gmail and other sites use body.onKeyUp (or onKeyDown) to handle keyboard codees without pressing ALT/CTRL. This removes the differentiation of ALT/CTRL for PC/Mac and also removes the need for IE users to press enter.

I’ve also grown accostomed to j/k being next/previous rather than a/z.

Keep up the great work - 30boxes rocks.

Problem: I used the import utility to add events, and I didn’t get a chance to read all the “One Box help examples”. Are those posted online somewhere?

Its not a good idea to hijack browsers shortcuts.

ALT+D is known and widly used shortcut to access address bar.

OK, the D key has been retired in favor of n

Could the ALT + x be changed?

It doesn’t seem to work in Firefox — it highlights the Google Search box instead. I have to use alt + H to get back to the calendar after pressing alt + n which gives an unnecessary refresh.

Scrolling through the days would also be cool — I vote for j and k.
