Calendar publishing, and some belated revelationsFebruary 5th, 2006 by Nick |
So I’ve been a skeptic. I’ve resisted the siren song of the Mac (and the constant nagging from my partners) for quite a while. Too trendy, not a good testing platform, and the old problem keeping most people on Windows: Better, the enemy of good enough.
But today, Mother Necessity stepped in. I just finished up the first phase of our publishing system and fired up my brand new Powerbook. I clicked the new “iCalendar Subscription” link and, holy crap, my entire calendar was replicated on the Mac. What’s really cool is that updates actually work. And repeating events. And URLs. As a matter of fact, everything about this new little computer is just working. Let’s say my Outlook tests didn’t go so well. As a matter of fact, nothing on my PC seems to go so well.
As I reveled in the Mac glory, I realized, hey, why not allow you to publish/subscribe to just part of your calendar, and then share just that slice of your calendar with anyone, or everyone. And that’s now near the top of the list: soon, you’ll be able to select some tags and create a publishable calendar for your soccer team, work group, whatever. You can already use this system to control what your buddies see, but now you have a link to share with anyone. All while just managing a single calendar for yourself. I love it when you can derive new functionality with no extra work on your part!

Beautiful and very useable web calendar! Great work and I’m sure more great things are to come. What I’ve found is dozens of Web 2.0ish calendars, and each of them have their own take on things; what I’d like to find is one that can sync with Yahoo Calendar and/or Outlook Calendar - that’d be the super calendar web app for me!

I can get web>ICal, but not ICal>30 Boxes, is there a way to synch/publish?

Will a vCal version be available soon for us Palm users? The iCal format was based heavily on vCal - so I uneducated-guess that it wouldn’t be too hard to program? I can import the iCal file to Palm Desktop now but it comes up with a colon (:) before each entry.
Otherwise, great little webapp - looking forward to watching it’s development.
